Top 10 Fall Family Fun Activities

Autumn is near, it's time to break out the flannels!

It happens every year in Virginia. The days start to cool down, the local coffee shop starts advertising pumpkin spiced lattes, and then all of a sudden, you wake up one morning, and the crisp in the air lets you know it's officially fall.
We thought it would be a fun idea to come up with a top 10 list of fall family fun activities to take advantage of this season in and around our city. But don't worry if you're more of a home-body, we've got ideas for you too! If you think our list is missing anything, feel free to let us know in the comments!

1. Brigadoon Movie in the Park and Canned Food Drive

Getting out into the neighborhood and meeting your community may be the perfect way to start the season! Brigadoon Civic Leauge has graciously invited Grace River to join them for a movie night in the park happening on October 14. In addition, they're asking attendees to bring a canned food donation for the local food bank. We've heard rumors that there may even be a Kona Ice Truck. It sounds like a great way to say "bye-bye" to summer and "hello" to fall.

2. A Trip to the Farm

When you live in Virginia Beach, it's easy to forget that in a short time's drive, you can get away from the hustle and bustle and enjoy a cool day on the farm. May we suggest a trip to Hunt Club Farm off of London Bridge Road? From September 25-October 31st, your family can enjoy a pumpkin patch, pony rides, farm tours, carnival rides, and farm animals without even leaving the city! To get tickets, visit

3. Town Center's Town & Treat

Maybe you like the idea of autumn in the city. If so, this event is for you! Head over to Virginia Beach's Town Center on October 23 from 10:00 am-2:00 pm for Town & Treat, a free, family-friendly event with trick-or-treating at local Town Center businesses, interactive activity stations, roaming characters, costume contests, and more! Did we mention this event is free!? Learn more at

4. Get Lost in a Corn Maze

Similar to a trip to the farm, maybe your family wants to get lost in a corn maze! There are not one but TWO corn mazes in our area this year. Maybe try out both? Pack up the car and head over to Cullipher Farms or Bergey's Breadbasket, both conveniently located in Virginia Beach! There, you and your family can race through the corn mazes to see who wins bragging rights for the year! Learn more and get tickets at:

5. Join a Grace Group

6. Go Camping

If you're on a budget, this may be the family activity you've been looking for. There is no need to pack food or a tent as long as you plan to catch your food and rough it under the stars. Maybe just set up a tent in the backyard? Or, even better, have the campfire, the s'mores, and the roasted hot dogs, then send the kiddos to bed and enjoy the great indoors. Here's the key, spend time with those you love.

7. Take a Hike

Maybe you are the outdoors type and would enjoy a crisp autumn hike. There's no need to travel to the mountains; just head over to First Landing State Park or False Cape State Park and enjoy some of the most incredible views Virginia Beach has to offer! Did you know that First Landing State Park is considered the northern-most point where you'll find Spanish moss growing naturally? Learn more about these parks here:

8. Do Some Baking

There are so many baked goods that you seem to only get in the fall: pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread, spice cake, sweet potato pie, snickerdoodles. We could go on and on. Take advantage of this season by spending some special time in the kitchen with the whole family. We promise those memories will last longer than the baked goods a long shot!

9. MoCA's Boardwalk Art Show

Are you an art fan? If so, this one is for you. A 65-year tradition is back to the Oceanfront, and it's one of the only outdoor art shows produced by an accredited museum. It's the Boardwalk Art Show in Virginia Beach! This three-day art show hosts nearly 200 artists from around the country with mediums including ceramics, photography, sculpture, and glasswork. This year, the MoCA has added a free family park with activities like pumpkin picking, art kits, face painting, balloon animals, and rotating performances from local youth and performance groups. It's all happening this October 22-24. Learn more at

10. Family Night In

When you run out of things to do, there's always one thing that's sure to be fun: a family night in. Rent a movie, order a pizza, break out the board games, do whatever your family finds fun! The important part is that you do it together. At Grace River, we want to see every generation experience transformation, and we value the family. Love on your kids this season. Let them know that God loves them too.
